Robotic Nipple Sparing Mastectomy
A robotic nipple sparing mastectomy (RNSM) is a surgical procedure performed to remove the breast tissue for breast cancer treatment or as a preventative measure for those at risk of developing breast cancer. While Dr. Chagares has been performing mastectomies throughout his career, he has incorporated robotic surgery into his skillset since the inception of the technology.
By performing the same long-held mastectomy procedure with robotic assistance, Dr. Chagares is able to operate using a significantly smaller hidden incision created on the side of the chest wall (comparatively pictured above) in an RNSM compared to the traditional technique.
Following the procedure, patients can sagely choose to undergo immediate breast reconstruction to restore breast shape. Published research on the procedure continues to report high rates of satisfaction and minimal complications for patients.
Who Can Perform This Procedure?
Surgeons must complete specialized robotic surgical training before they are able to utilize this technology on patients. Surgeons who specialize in breast surgery can perform a number of surgical procedures for the treatment or prevention of breast cancer, including a nipple sparing mastectomy.
Dr. Chagares has over 20 years of experience providing comprehensive breast care. He is experienced in robotic surgery and has trained at The European Institute of Oncology in Milan under Dr. Antonio Toesca who pioneered the RNSM technique. Dr. Chagares is currently the only breast surgeon in the United States who is certified to perform a robotic nipple sparing mastectomy for his patients.

Dr. Chagares is a one of a kind physician who helped making my decision to have a double mastectomy a much easier process. Dr. Chagares was the first doctor I saw after my diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma. He explained my surgical options with the risks and benefits clearly described. His compassionate, caring, affable personality aided in not only making my surgical decision but made it clear he was my choice for a surgeon as well.
From the initial consultation of my husband’s hernia surgery to the final follow up, Dr. Chagares and team were nothing short of amazing. The incredible customer service, attention to detail through the process and of course the way they put my mind at ease through the surgery. Dr. Chagares and team have set the bar very high. Their professionalism and passion to care for their patients and their families, is why I would highly recommend them. Again thank you for everything!
Last year I found myself knelt over in the worst pain of my life. I was having a gall bladder attack. I was rushed to the ER where I was advised to follow up with a general surgeon. I made an appointment with Dr. Stephen Chagares. He came highly recommended by the hospital and a number of friends who either had a family member or they used him themselves for gall bladder surgeries. After having an initial consult I felt so at ease that I was going to be in amazing hands. I brought my sonogram from the emergency room and Dr. Chagares reviewed all the details that the procedure would entail. He explained exactly what he was going to do, the recovery and why it was a good idea to remove the gall bladder. I made my surgical appointment that day with his kind and caring staff and knew I was in the best hands possible.
Fast forward to my surgery day, I was the first case in the AM at Riverview Hospital. Dr. Chagares came to meet me and review what we planned on doing as well as how I would feel postoperatively. I went into the OR and was asleep in minutes. I woke up in recovery and felt great. I heard so many negative comments online about gas pains in your stomach and shoulders that I was afraid. I felt great relatively speaking. The anesthesia needed to wear off and a little abdominal discomfort but nothing like I expected or heard about online.
Dr. Chagares is a fantastic surgeon, who goes above and beyond for his patients. . His kindness, professionalism and intelligence shines through and it is with 100% certainty that I would recommend Dr. Chagares.
I could not be happier with my experiences with Dr. Chagares and his staff. I found Dr. Chagares through various internet searches as I needed lipomas removed from my arms, legs and body. I’ve since had 2 procedures (they were surgeries, but they felt more like procedures) and 5 appointments and it’s been so easy, convenient and pleasurable. Amazing bedside manner, extremely friendly and accommodating staff and the surgery was like a walk in the park compared to others. I’d highly recommend.
I recently had a mammography and breast ultrasound. My doctor told me I needed to see a surgeon. I called Dr. Chagares’ office and they got me in right away. Dr. Chagares explained that I needed to have a biopsy and I was so scared. Luckily, my biopsy was negative and I am back to needing routine care. My experience with Dr. Chagares couldn’t have been any better. He was knowledgeable, he helped me understand everything that was going on and he made me feel at ease. The staff was so easy to deal with every step of the way. Amazing doctor and an amazing office. Highly recommend.
The greatest personality ever! Which made me comfortable and confident from the moment I met him. Had surgery today and he’s an incredible surgeon. He explains every detail of what to expect before and after the surgery and took his time making sure I was comfortable. His office staff were friendly, efficient and caring. I can’t say enough about him!
